CL5.5 The Bell System-You Be You
Recorded in 1985
Issued as 1 sided flexi by Celluloid Lunch 2020

You Be You - The Bell System
written by Craig Bell (BMI)

Craig Bell - guitar/vocal
Claudia Bell - bass guitar
Thomas O’ Connell - guitar
Michael Barone - drums

recorded live by Craig Bell for broadcast on WYBC- FM, New Haven CT. 1985

Back story -

I wrote You Be You in early 1985 while in The Bell System. It quickly became a popular staple in our set.

We had been asked to play on a radio show on the Yale University station in the fall of 1985. Future Plan had played on the show a few years previously and I recalled the difficulties playing live in the studio due to space constraints. I decided we would record the set live at our practice space and play the recording during the Sunday night show.

CL6.5. BGA- What's the Frequency?
Recorded in 1987
Issued by Celluloid Lunch as 1 sided flexi 2021

“What’s the Frequency?” was one of the first songs I wrote post-Terminal Sunglasses. It remained a fixture of my live sets for years, as performed first by The Brownie Points, then Bubblegum Army and finally with Slaphappy 5. I recorded it in 3 different studios with 3 different line-ups over the years. The version on the flexi disc is from the first effort, by the first Bubblegum Army line-up (w/Matthew Dupuis on 2nd guitar, Foster Grant on bass, Jackie Gallant on drums). The session was funded by the budget of a movie production (although none of the music from the session ended up on the soundtrack). It was recorded by Gavin Fernandes at Studio CRSG (Concordia University), in the autumn of 1987. The master reel from the recording was destroyed in a fire, but Mikey Young worked some mastering magic on a digitization of a cassette copy of a copy of a copy for the flexi.
When I listen to it all these years later, I have a hard time getting past the vocal affectations and shitty lyrics. I also hear the overt Television and Velvet Underground influences as dipping to the point of being derivative. However, I am proud that it can still manage to resonate with people; Joe’s enthusiasm for it tickles me and the fact that some guy from way out in Australia who I’ve never met (Mikey Young) called it a “lost classic” also kind of amazes me. Even more astounding is that, nearly 35 years after it was recorded, it’s going to be out (on vinyl, no less) and potentially heard by a few hundred new ears. Freakwinzy!
